There are many reasons to start first by getting a pre-approval letter from a lender, but one of the main reasons is that it puts you a step ahead in the buying process! Many sellers will ask for a pre-approval letter from a lender prior to reviewing the offer, or taking it serious. And if a great foreclosure comes on the market, the banks (unless paying cash) require a pre-approval letter with any offer! Since these usually go quickly, you want to be ready. Overall, it's really in your best interest as a buyer to have the pre-approval on hand.
Imagine 2 offers on the table to a seller, both very close in price.... one with a pre-approval & one without. Which one would look more appealing?

Lenders offer different programs & may not all require the same items... One lender may requrie a 620 credit score, while another may only require a 600.
